Farewells Amidst Snowfall and Homeward Bound

During our week-long stay in Gudauri, we encountered unexpected weather challenges, notably a heatwave arriving from the South that brought about an unusual absence of snowfall. The nights saw slushy snow refreezing into an icy crust, and while there was some barely noticeable snowfall, it paled in comparison to the abundant powder snow conducive to exceptional skiing and snowboarding experiences in Georgia. Unfortunately, this weather rendered most off-piste runs, especially in steeper and avalanche-prone areas, inaccessible, flagged with warnings that prompted us to adhere to safer trails around Gudauri.

Despite the weather’s challenges, we made the most of our time, seizing opportunities for a handful of invigorating hikes and off-piste rides that etched unforgettable memories into our journey’s tapestry.

One of our adventures led us on a hike in pursuit of discovering a cross, a quest that culminated in triumphant success! Amidst this scenic escapade, we unexpectedly crossed paths with a paraglider soaring above, prompting an exhilarating moment where we managed to exchange a high-five, an epic encounter at the local summit. However, a word of caution: the excitement was equally matched by a mild pang, a reminder to exercise care amidst thrilling exploits.

On the final day of our Georgian escapade, nature gifted us with a mesmerizing spectacle—the legendary snowfall. However, this beautiful gesture arrived at a somewhat inconvenient time, casting a shadow of uncertainty over our departure from Gudauri. With our snowboards snugly packed into wheelie bags among our belongings, the pre-arranged taxi arrived punctually at 2 am, ready to ferry us on a 5 to 6-hour journey to Kutaisi for our departure.

The airport experience unfolded in a series of fortunate events and unforeseen challenges. While I hadn’t purchased a priority boarding pass, much to my friends’ dismay, everyone else seemed to have acquired one! Miraculously, I found myself behind only three individuals at the check-in counter and swiftly completed the process.

However, as fate would have it, my airport adventures rarely conclude without an unexpected twist. Amidst the airport’s bustling ambience, a sudden announcement rang through the speakers calling for my immediate attention: “Mr. Pat, please proceed to security.” Such summonings in a foreign land, especially involving airport security, rarely fostered tranquil thoughts. My heart raced with trepidation as I was ushered to undergo a thorough inspection of my luggage.

The scenario seemed dire, as suspicions arose over items innocuously placed within my toiletries bag—a brush, a razor, and a bottle of perfume—mistakenly arranged in a manner that raised alarm bells. For a fleeting moment, a wave of panic surged, but relief washed over as the misunderstanding was resolved. Thankfully, it wasn’t the ominous affair they had speculated—a bomb—but merely a peculiar arrangement of toiletries. Finally cleared by security, I was permitted to board the aircraft, bidding adieu to the enchanting landscapes of Georgia, destined to return to the damp, dreary, yet familiar embrace of the UK’s cold climate.
